FLOWER MARKET 2.0 BLOOMs AT ROCKEFELLER CENTER

Artist Cj Hendry is back with a second edition of her plush Flower Market, the interactive installation which has just transformed New York City‘s Rockefeller Center into a landscape of hand-crafted flowers. New Yorkers and visitors are welcome to explore the space and curate their own bouquet for just one weekend from Friday, September 19th until Sunday, September 21st, 2025 from 10am-7pm.

This year’s opening comes one year after the Flower Market’s viral debut. That first iteration occupied the minimalist Louis Kahn-designed park at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island before it expanded to Brooklyn’s Industry City to accommodate swelling crowds. Those previous sites were certainly less central than this year’s prime spot in Midtown Manhattan — the elongated greenhouse sits beneath the plaza’s row of world flags and overlooks the sunken courtyard which, during the winter months, hosts the city’s most iconic ice rink.

Twenty-seven new plush flower designs are introduced this year, each produced with the same attention to quality and detail that defines Cj Hendry’s varied practice. Visitors are invited to select a flower to take home, with all additional flowers available for just $5 USD. This way, the installation extends beyond its setting and out into the rest of the city. ‘It was so lovely to see every other person below 14th street carrying a bouquet of flowers,’ writes a commenter on social media.

Cj hendry is ‘dialing it up to 100’

With its new location in Rockefeller Center, Cj Hendry’s Flower Market is still an immersive, greenhouse-like environment. Inside, a series of original artworks by the artist’s studio, editioned floral wall sculptures, and a line of limited-edition merchandise — including totes, t-shirts, and caps — extend the project into multiple formats.

A satellite Flower Cart at Top of the Rock, open daily from early morning until midnight, even brings the work into dialogue with one of the most well-known observation decks in New York. Moreover, a limited 28th plush flower design is being offered exclusively at Top of the Rock as an add-on to ticketed entry.

Hendry describes last year’s Flower Market as ‘chaotic and beautiful,’ a spontaneous exchange between her artworks and the city, so that interaction and collection become part of the art. This Flower Market 2.0 version channels that same energy into a context which is even more chaotic. ‘We’re dialing everything up to one hundred,’ she says.

keff joons: interactive inflatable art arrives in brooklyn

In a quiet, industrial pocket on the outskirts of Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood, artist Cj Hendry unveils Keff Joons, her most colossal architectural intervention yet. Housed in a cavernous warehouse at 50 Gold Street, the work is an exhibition and a disorienting monument to scale and sensation. A tangled explosion of oversized inflatable ‘balloons,’ the work takes up nearly every inch of vertical and horizontal space, inviting visitors to climb into the chaos. At once playful and a little bit terrifying, the space distorts your sense of direction, weight, and proportion, to bring an experience that’s more akin to a bounce house crossed with an Escher drawing.

Keff Joons is on view from April 11th — 20th, 2025 at 50 Gold Street in Brooklyn’s Vinegar Hill. It will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, but lines are likely — Hendry’s installations have a reputation for drawing enthusiastic crowds.

cj hendry dissolves structure and play

Inspired by Jeff Koons’ balloon-animal iconography but veering off into absurdist territory, Cj Hendry has crafted something decidedly her own. Keff Joons asks: what happens when structure dissolves and play becomes the architecture? ‘While Jeff has transformed the balloon animal into an icon of art, I’ve cobbled together these balloon ‘knots’ that forgo structure and form and are totally ridiculous,’ the artist says. That irreverence is part of the appeal — it encourages visitors to interact, to climb, to trust the materials and their curiosity. Nothing is roped off, everything is touchable. Here, architecture isn’t static. It wobbles, it squeaks, it responds.

The installation takes shape as a tangle of individual oversized balloons in electric hues of red, green, pink, yellow, and purple. They are not arranged as disparate sculptures but rather meld into a dense, architectural knot. Keff Joons doesn’t just occupy space; it swallows it, with balloon arms coiling and sprawling across multiple rooms like a surreal organism. It’s immersive and ungraspable, forcing visitors to feel their way through the tangled mass, often on hands and knees. There’s no signage, no guidance — only the rubbery scent of vinyl, the squeak of air-shifting surfaces, and a thrill that lands somewhere between childhood joy and low-level adrenaline.

cj hendry keff joons
image © Cj Hendry Studio

Adjacent to the Keff Joons balloon labyrinth, Cj Hendry grounds the installation with a selection of her trademark hyper-realistic pencil drawings. Nine in total, the works zoom in on individual balloons — now suddenly delicate, isolated, and precise. There’s also a sculptural maquette of the entire installation, offering a bird’s-eye view of the chaos you’ve just scrambled through. These quieter, more contemplative pieces reveal the technical rigor behind the whimsy, highlighting the artist’s gift for straddling the line between spectacle and skill.

To experience Keff Joons, visitors must shed their shoes, sign a waiver, and suit up in orange grip socks — part uniform, part equalizer. It’s a logistical detail that adds to the sense of ritual. One is not just looking at art. Visitors are entering it, physically and psychologically. Hendry understands the power of participation, of turning viewers into climbers, sliders, and explorers. The experience is democratic, and hilariously impractical. No backpacks, no coats, no skirts. Just the viewer and the balloons.

A Unique Floral Experience at Roosevelt Island

Contemporary artist Cj Hendry brings her latest immersive installation, Flower Market, to FDR Four Freedoms State Park on New York’s Roosevelt Island. In collaboration with global luxury beauty brand Clé de Peau Beauté and the Four Freedoms Park Conservancy, this large-scale exhibition invites visitors to explore and interact with a vibrant greenhouse filled with thousands of plush flowers.

Inspired by the natural botanicals found in Clé de Peau Beauté’s skincare products, Hendry’s Flower Market is a 120-foot by 40-foot greenhouse featuring 100,000 individually crafted plush flowers. The artist references Ralph Waldo Emerson, quoting the poet: ‘Many eyes go through the meadow, but few see the flowers in it.’ The installation transforms this sentiment into a physical experience, inviting visitors to walk among the vibrant, hand-crafted blooms.

cj hendry’s flower market has historical roots

Visitors to the Flower Marker on Roosevelt Island will encounter plush blossoms, along with twelve original drawings by Cj Hendry, created specifically for the Flower Market. Guests are encouraged to take home a plush flower as a keepsake. For those unable to visit in person, the artist has created a virtual flower market, where participants can design their own personalized plush lily.

The exhibition also pays homage to the Roosevelt family with a curated bouquet reflecting their legacy. The yellow Eleanor Roosevelt Rose, tulips representing the family’s Dutch heritage, and red roses — a nod to the ‘Roosevelt’ name — are among the flowers on display. Meanwhile, peonies, a signature flower from the Roosevelt farm, are part of this symbolic bouquet.

Hendry draws parallels between her work and the design philosophy of Louis Kahn, the architect behind Four Freedoms Park. ‘When Kahn designed this memorial, he said, ‘The garden is somehow a personal kind of control of nature,’ Hendry recalls. She sees her exhibition as an extension of this concept, creating an environment where visitors can step out of their ordinary lives and into a space that is both immersive and playful. ‘I hope Flower Market inspires joy and beauty well after the greenhouse is empty, every time we see flowers — plush or otherwise.’

The partnership with Clé de Peau Beauté stems from a shared appreciation for fine craftsmanship. Hendry notes how one particular botanical, the Radiant Lily, which features in Clé de Peau Beauté’s The Serum, inspired her work. ‘The meticulous craftsmanship in CPB’s products really resonates with me and mirrors my own process,’ she explains.

Alessio Rossi, Executive Vice President of Clé de Peau Beauté US Marketing, is excited about the collaboration with Hendry. ‘This partnership embodies the essence of our brand, known for its intelligence, uncompromising standards, and exquisite quality,’ Rossi says. He emphasizes how Hendry’s ability to engage audiences through her craftsmanship aligns with the values of the beauty brand.

Howard Axel, CEO of the Four Freedoms Park Conservancy, adds, ‘We were immediately excited to work with such an exceptional contemporary artist as Cj Hendry and help share her magical work with tens of thousands of visitors.’ Axel believes Hendry’s Flower Market captures the spirit of Kahn’s original vision for the park, designed to be a place of ‘inspired use.’

Cj Hendry’s public pool celebrates Vegas extravagance

New York-based artist Cj Hendry transforms the desert landscape of Sandy Valley Ranch, Nevada, with the installation of her vibrant Public Pool. Running from April 5 to 7, 2024, the piece is accompanied by a comprehensive exhibition informed by the dazzling ambiance of Vegas hotel pool parties, as well as Hendry’s distinctive style and playful wit.

Central to the Public Pool experience is a massive 50-meter-long inflatable pool, towering at a height of 3 feet. Through Cj’s creative vision, this seemingly ordinary structure becomes a dynamic reflection of the spirit of Viva Las Vegas, complete with its ‘glitz and whimsical kitsch’. Amidst the desert backdrop, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in this unexpected oasis, in a celebration of Vegas extravagance.

diving into the fantastical world of the public pool

Cj Hendry is known for transforming her fascination with contemporary material culture into large-scale,
hyper-photorealistic drawings. Her work isn’t intended to be passively observed but actively experienced through engaging, fun, and thought-provoking exhibits. The same applies to Public Pool. The installation includes hot pink flamingos, neon inflatables, and colorful floral motifs, inviting visitors to indulge in an extravagant and fantastical world. ‘I love the vivacity of Las Vegas and the duality of the desert together. I hope this exhibition sparks joy, connection, and a sense of wonder for everyone who dives into the experience,’ shares the artist.

To commemorate Public Pool, a select number of Hendry’s limited-edition drawings and editions, and a collection of beach towels, floaties, sunscreen, totes, hats, t-shirts, and other pool-themed items will be available for purchase at the artist’s official website (find more here).

what not to miss

BMW x Alex Israel

BMW returns as the official partner of Art Basel Miami Beach, this year teaming up with Los Angeles-based artist Alex Israel with an installation titled REMEMBR. The interactive, AI-powered video installation takes inspiration from the 100% electric BMW i5, and explores the intersection of art and technology to offer ‘a journey through time and memory.’ Israel worked closely with BMW to develop AI technology that will collect, filter, compose and choreograph camera content from visitors’ phones — all with the aim to capture the essence of modern life. Spanning seven custom-designed screens, the immersive installation continues BMW’s commitment to innovation, cutting-edge technology, and the arts. REMEMBR by BMW and Alex Israel will be on view alongside the fully electric BMW i5 at the BMW Lounge at Art Basel Miami Beach Collectors Lounge from December 8th — December 10th.

Benches by Samuel Ross

Beginning in November 2023, Miami Deign District will introduce a permanent installation by multifaceted British designer Samuel Ross. It consists of three distinct bench designs which will be installed across public areas and pedestrian walkways. The unique pieces will reflect the artist and designer’s fascination with concepts related to functionality in public space. The benches are crafted from CNC Steel and powder coating. With their anamorphic forms, each design was informed by hand sketches in charcoal, Indian ink and pencil. These primitive concepts were then translated into a three-dimensional form.

Lexus x Marjan van Aubel

Lexus partners with Dutch solar designer Marjan van Aubel to create a sun-powered installation for Miami Art & Design Week 2023. The show’s title, ‘8 Minutes and 20 Seconds,’ references the time it takes light from the sun to reach the earth. Inspired by the Lexus LF-ZC battery electric vehicle (BEV) concept car, the installation showcases the potential of carbon-neutral energy harnessing through the use of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. OPV sheets on the installation cast colorful shadows throughout the day, while sensors within the sculpture make it an engaging, interactive experience. The collaboration marks the artist’s first public endeavor in Miami and continues Lexus’s tradition of supporting Miami Art & Design Week in collaboration with ICA Miami. Lexus and Marjan van Aubel will exhibit ‘8 Minutes and 20 Seconds’ within the sculpture garden at Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Miami, 61 NE 41st St.

Faena x Sebastian Errazuriz

Faena Art unveils its centerpiece during Miami Art Week, a full-scale maze installation by artist Sebastian Errazuriz constructed on the sands of Faena Beach. Titled ‘MAZE: Journey Through the Algorithmic Self,’ this intricate labyrinth, crafted with the aid of AI tools like Midjourney and DALL-E 2, invites visitors to explore its pathways, inevitably drawing them toward a central reflective monolith — a beacon of introspection and communal connection. This enigmatic structure serves as both an art piece and as a hub for performances and community gatherings throughout Miami Art Week. Through this immersive experience, the artist invites us to question the impact of AI on our world, prompting us to reaffirm the vital importance of face-to-face human interactions. ‘MAZE: Journey Through the Algorithmic Self’ by Sebastian Errazuriz will be open from December 5th — 10th on the sands of Faena Beach.

‘Miami Take Over’ by Andrés Reisinger

This year, in the Miami Design District, Argentinian artist Andrés Reisinger will be installing his first physical work. Like his recent digital artworks, which depict fluffy, flossy pink drapes cloaking building facades, this physical work will introduce a billowing pink curtain to the Miami streetscrape. The artist explains: ‘I conceived the installation to transcend mere visuality and become a confrontation, a mirror reflecting the viewer’s own mutable internal landscapes. I delved myself into an ongoing exploration of the fluctuating boundaries between consciousness and the unconscious, a dialogue that finds echoes in art. The installation emerges as a synthesis of practices, a conduit for transformative experiences.’ Miami Take Over by Andrés Reisinger will be on view from December 4th — 10th at 178 NE 39th St. in the Miami Design District.

Dan Lam at Wynwood Walls

Known for her oozing and multicolored artworks, Dan Lam will be unveiling a massive sculpture at Wynwood Walls, one of the best venues in Miami to see leading street artists. Titled ‘A Subtle Alchemy,’ the sculpture stands over 8.5 feet tall to mark one of Dan’s largest pieces to date. It is crafted from metal, styrofoam, and epoxy, and is the first of the artist’s pieces to be painted with automotive paint and finished with a chameleon pigment — a finish which lends the dripping forms their shifting, iridescent hues. The work will be a part of the group show ‘The Power of Purpose,’ open from November 24th — December 10th, 2023 at Wynwood Walls, 2516 NW 2nd Ave, Miami.

RIFLESSI at TRAME

Digital gallery and collaboration studio TRAME debuts RIFLESSI, an exhibition which displays the works of two artists — ‘Optimism’ by Jeff Davis and ‘Portraits’ by Martin Grasser. Both artists are known for their algorithmic studies of color, and will unveil selected pieces from their upcoming collections in collaboration with TRAME. With ‘Optimism,’ Jeff Davis draws inspiration from the principles of Frank Lloyd Wright. He blends his passion for color and formal art with the timeless medium of stained glass. Davis, with over a decade of experience in algorithmic generative art — collaborated with TRAME, Atelier Loire, and Neal Feay to bring this work to life. With ‘Portraits,’ Martin Grasser converges his experience with generative algorithms to create mirrors. These mirrors test the fluidity and interpretative nature of language and typography. Grasser’s journey into the fine-art world is fueled by a lifelong connection with typography. Collaborating with TRAME, he leverages the quality of Venetian mirrored glass to create a visual language, where words and phrases become new abstract forms. RIFLESSI will be on view at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens during Miami Art Week 2023.

Craig Robins Collection ‘A Train Of Thoughts’

The Miami-based Craig Robins Collection features more than 1,300 pieces of contemporary art and innovative design. Showcased at the Dacra Headquarters in the Miami Design District, this year’s rearrangement of the collection is named ‘A Train of Thoughts,’ centering on two primary subgroups — figuration and conceptualism. The exhibition underscores the collection’s history of preferring intense and exaggerated figurative images alongside a self-reflective critique of art based on ideas. Although this combination seems incompatible, it gives rise to unexpected conversations. The Craig Robins Collection exhibition ‘A Train of Thoughts’ will be on view at Dacra Headquarters, 3841 NE 2nd Ave., Miami, from December 6th — 8th, 2023.

gleefully, CJ hendry found a way around her boredom with realism — all she needed was a bouncy house, some horror movie references and the unstable minds of her viewers. RORSCHACH, CJ’s 6th solo exhibition, invites you to be one of those unstable minds. bounce in her house of existential horrors and nostalgic joys. interpret her meticulously hand drawn inkblots with childlike wonder and fearful uncertainty.

CJ hendry’s RORSCHACH opens its plushy, claustrophobic doors from april 10 – april 21, 2019, in dumbo, brooklyn. inside, 3,000 square feet of all-white cushions can transport up to 100 guests at a time to a headspace that walks a fine line between bouncy nostalgia and insanity.

each hyperrealistic drawing is titled from a horror movie. above, american psycho, stares back at us in pinks and blues that seem to rise and slide and drip off the page. we might not see norman bates or christian bale or dorsia in this inkblot. in fact, we will most likely all see something slightly different, but for a mechanical draftsman like CJ, the psychological subject matter was perfect for stirring up her boredom with realism.

‘for a long time, I have been bored with realism, its painfully obvious and rigid, the viewer is given no room for interpretation. these squish paintings are unpredictable and unadulterated. of course, there is mechanical draftsmanship in the execution of my drawings but when you step back and look at the final result there is no clear answer, people will see something different every time,’ says CJ hendry of her latest exhibition.

a 22,000 square foot industrial space in brooklyn has been re-conceived as an all-encompassing colorscape. divided across seven distinct rooms, new york-based artist CJ hendry has envisioned ‘MONOCHROME’ as a walk-through tableau of vivid tones and tints, with each color corresponding to the art hanging on the walls. the faux-home sees every area of the ‘house’ pained entirely in one, monochromatic color. the spectacle — sure to make instagrammers swoon in seas of saturated bliss — is on view from april 5th — april 8th, 2018 at 276 greenpoint ave.

CJ hendry

‘MONOCHROME’ comes as a sharp departure for CJ hendry, a hyperrealistic artist widely known for black and white pen drawings of objects and kitsch pop culture. ‘I am new to color, not too sure if i understand it yet,’ she says. ‘color is exciting and sad and frustrating and confusing. color is all around us, it’s everywhere. color is not a physical thing, it’s a thing that describes something else. by drawing crumpled colored cards I have given color a physicality and form.’

CJ hendry

the installation’s walls are made up of carefully-stacked everblocks, which create inhabitable, domestic spaces. canvassed in hues of bright blue, green, pink, purple, yellow, orange and red, the rooms are painted to match CJ hendry’s hyperrealistic drawings of crumpled pantone color swatches.

‘people generally buy art as the last item, they find art to match their home. I have become close with my collectors over the years and have noticed how differently they live their lives. art is the first thing they add to a space and they design their entire home around their collection. I have taken this concept to an extreme level. each room has been designed to emulate the art on the wall. the art is the focus, everything matches the art.’
